Gatsby style at home

Image: Catherine Martin range for Mokum

There’s been so much talk of how Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby has influenced fashion, but it’s had huge impact on interior design as well.

While Catherine Martin had her creative hand in the costume design for the Gatsby movie, inspiration from the 1920s era flowed on to her popular interiors line and a signature range for Mokum (pictured). Art deco graphics are reflected in a variety of opulent textures and available across a range of wallpaper, cushions, fabrics, upholstery materials and passementeries as well as rugs through Designer Rugs.

Although the fabrics in the range are art deco inspired, they can be worked in to a more contemporary setting quite easily. The Luhrmann/Martin mansion in Sydney’s Darlinghurst is geared toward the art nouveau style and the couple has decorated quite lavishly with much of Martin’s range, but the style does also lend itself to a timeless setting where glamour is the order of the day.

The extreme of glamourous interiors is certainly a current trend, which sits alongside an equally strong movement towards casual living and the retro trend. We find after people see The Great Gatsby they’re very much inspired to incorporate aspects of the art deco look into their homes, and this can be achieved in the majority of Australian homes.

Cheers,
