Top 5 ways to update a boring kitchen

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then how can we let it be boring? Function is important, but great design shouldn’t be underestimated, and can actually work toward a more functional kitchen in any case.

Here are some easy ways to breathe new life into your kitchen:

Add a chalkboard

For shopping lists, notes to one another, recipes and reminders, chalkboards are becoming increasingly popular in contemporary open plan kitchens. Either buy a pre-made board, a chalkboard decal or paint a surface with chalkboard paint depending on how permanent you would like the addition. These work particularly well as narrow panels on the side of a pantry or end of a wall.

Wallpaper

Create interest behind your bench tops as a splashback feature or on a feature wall, with the addition of a print wallpaper in the kitchen. For durability in this high traffic area, look for a vinyl paper that can be wiped over.

Install a bookcase

For cookbooks, newspapers or a magazine to sit, a bookcase near a kitchen breakfast bar can encourage everyone to pick something up and read it when they have a few moments. Even being together in the same area can make washing dishes less of a chore.

Create a herb garden

Apart from the obvious health benefits of internal plants, they also add vibrance and life to any room, and a herb garden on the kitchen windowsill or vertical garden on a visable wall (internal or external) will add spice to your cooking as well! Make sure to place them in a sunny spot and delight in the fragrant backdrop to any meal preparation.

Update your splashback

There are countless ways to add pizzazz to a splashback, which can really lift the look of a kitchen. Try a mirrored backing, metallic or reflective tiles for a modern look. As mentioned above, use wallpaper behind clear or frosted glass, or retile in a feature tile of your liking. Add LED strip lighting or soft, moody downlights to the overhead cupboards to really highlight your splashback.

Update the hardware

Handles are an easy way to update the kitchen without spending a lot of money or requiring a professional. Just ensure that you know the measurements between the existing handle holes. The last thing you want is more holes in the doors and drawers. And look further afield for a handle supplier, even check with a kitchen manufacturer for the latest handles available, don’t rely on just your local hardware store.
